BIRTHSTONES Since the beginning of recoreded history, people all around the world have believed certian gemstones posess magical and mysterious powers. Long before people started to wear gemstones associated with a particular birthmonth, they would wear stones believed to improve certain human virtues. The custom of wearing a gemstone associated with one's birth month probably started in Europe around the 1700's. Over time there have been many variations of the list; dating all the way back to biblical times when the Jewish High Priest wore a breastplate with 12 gemstones, one for each of the tribes of Israel. In 1912, the American National Retail Jewelers Association substituted a new list of birthstones, changing some of the traditional gems to others, which may be more available. Most recently, the American Gem Society has modified this list to incorporate more currently used gemstones.
