Can I Sleep in My Ring?
What a Jeweler RecommendsSure, you can sleep in your ring. However, not sleeping in it is the better choice.
We move around quite a bit in our sleep, and sometimes our hands take a beating without us even realizing it. That can mean damage to your ring—or, believe it or not, even to your significant other.
Your sheets and blankets can also cause unnecessary wear. Over time, the friction from your sheets can contribute to wear on your prongs. A prong can also catch on a blanket, potentially bending it and creating a loose stone. And nobody wants to wake up with a damaged ring and a ruined blanket.
Give Your Ring a Break at Night
Sleeping in your jewelry creates unnecessary wear and tear on something that's probably very important to you.Think about it this way: Would you sleep in a nice suit or a nice dress?
Of course not.
Your ring deserves a little time off, too.
There's another reason I recommend taking your ring off before bed: your fingers change size throughout the day.
For me, my finger size can fluctuate anywhere from half a size to a full size depending on what I'm doing. Taking your ring off at night gives your fingers a chance to relax and return closer to their normal size.
What If You Prefer to Sleep in Your Ring?
If you're someone who just doesn't want to take your ring off, that's okay. Just be aware that you're putting more wear and tear on it.In that case, I'd recommend stopping in to see us a little more often so we can check your ring, inspect the prongs, and give it a good cleaning. Catching a loose or worn prong early can help prevent a much bigger problem later.
And, of course, if you're ever unsure about the condition of your ring, just bring it in. We'd rather take a look at it before there's a problem.
A little time off at night can go a long way toward keeping your ring looking great, and keeping that stone where it belongs.
