"How Do I Know If My Ring Fits Right?"

How Do I Know If My Ring Fits Right?

How should a ring actually feel when it fits correctly?

Your ring should be comfortable on your hand, but it shouldn't slide off easily. And because our fingers change throughout the day and throughout the year, getting the perfect fit isn't always as simple as finding one number and sticking with it.

Here's what I tell our guests when they're trying to figure out whether their ring fits correctly.

How Should a Ring Fit?

A well-fitting ring should feel comfortable where it sits on your finger, but you should have to give it a little tug to get it over your knuckle.

It shouldn't feel like it's squeezing your finger, but it also shouldn't slide right off.

If a ring is too loose, it may spin around your finger, especially if it's a top-heavy ring. It can also slide past your knuckle more easily than you'd want.

If a ring is too tight, it won't be comfortable—and it can become difficult or even painful to put on and take off.

The goal is somewhere in between: comfortable enough to wear all day, but secure enough that you don't feel like it's going to fall off.

Why Does My Ring Fit Differently From Day to Day?

This is one of the most important things to remember when you're deciding whether your ring needs to be resized:

Your fingers change.

Throughout the year, and even throughout a single day, our hands can swell and shrink. Heat, cold, activity, and even what you've eaten or had to drink can affect how your ring feels.

For example, you might notice your rings feel tighter on a hot summer day or after eating salty foods. On a cold winter day, your fingers may be smaller and your ring may feel noticeably looser.

The ring itself can also affect how tight it feels. The thicker the ring, the tighter it will generally feel on your finger, even if two rings have the exact same size.

That's why I don't recommend rushing to resize a ring because it feels a little tight on one particular day.

Unless your ring is falling off or you can't comfortably get it on or off, give it some time. See how it feels throughout the week and, if possible, through different seasons.

Your ring should ultimately be comfortable for you.

If you prefer a slightly looser fit because you don't like the feeling of a tight ring, that's okay. If you like your ring to fit more snugly so you can always feel it on your finger, that's okay, too.

How Do I Know If My Ring Is Too Loose?

Here are a few things to watch for:

- Does your ring spin around your finger regularly? This can be especially noticeable with a top-heavy ring.
- Does it slip past your knuckle easily?
- Does it feel like it could slide off your finger?
- Does it feel noticeably looser in colder weather?
If you're answering yes to these questions consistently (not just on one unusually cold day) it may be worth having your ring checked for sizing.

How Do I Know If My Ring Is Too Tight?

A ring may be too tight if:

- You're having trouble getting it on or off regularly.
- It feels uncomfortable throughout the day.
- It's leaving a deep indentation in your finger.
- You can't comfortably make a fist.
- It feels like it's restricting your finger.
If you're having trouble getting your ring on or off, or you're concerned that it's affecting circulation, don't force it. It's worth having a jeweler take a look.

What If My Ring Gets Stuck?

If your ring is stuck on your finger, don't panic.

One of our favorite tricks for getting a stuck ring off is Windex. It acts as a lubricant and can help the ring slide over your knuckle more easily.

Just be careful not to force the ring if your finger is significantly swollen or you're experiencing pain. If you're unable to remove it, seek professional help.

Still Not Sure If Your Ring Fits?

Ring sizing isn't always as straightforward as a number on a sizing stick. Your ring, your finger, the weather, and even the way you wear your jewelry can all affect how it feels.

If you're not sure whether your ring fits correctly, bring it in and let us take a look. We'd be happy to help you figure out whether you actually need a different size, or whether your ring is fitting just the way it should.
