Since 1900, we’ve helped thousands of guys find the perfect ring. In that time we’ve learned a thing or two about what makes a proposal memorable.

To understand what makes a good proposal, let’s look at some things to avoid when popping the question.

1. Don’t make it about you
You may appear in the engagement photos, but make no mistake, this is HER moment. Make every effort to use her preferences in your planning (that means no lighthouses if she’s afraid of heights).

2. Don’t Overcomplicate it
Jumbotrons and Tattoos are great… sometimes. Remember, the memorability of your proposal comes more from your timing and personality, than from any grandeur involved.



3. Don’t Rush it
100% of the proposals on Buzzfeed’s “26 Proposal Fails” can be lumped into the group of rushed or improper planning. Take your time and do it right, you only get one shot!

4. Don’t Forget to Capture the Moment
No you don’t need to hire a professional undercover photographer, but you can likely find someone to capture the moment (or the moments after). Your future selves will be happy you did.

5. Don’t get the Wrong Ring
While it may not change her answer, knowing the type of ring she wants is key to getting an A+ on your proposal. Be aware of any hints or Pinterest pins that can lead you to her perfect ring. 

From hanging off of cliffs to the top of skyscrapers, we’ve seen it all. It can be scary taking that huge step, but remember why you're doing it: to show her that she’s the only one for you in a way that the two of you will never forget.
