The Opal is the October birthstone

The dramatic, mysterious opal is one of nature's most unusual gemstones. Its unique play of colors is seen in irridescent shades of black, red, blue, pastels and pearly white. Opal is October's birthstone, together with the gemstone tourmaline.

The Romans considered opal a symbol of hope, an appropriate attribute for a gem with a rainbow locked within it. The Arabs believed opals fell from heaven in flashes of lightning, thus acquiring their fiery colors.

Black opal, the most treasured of all, has a dark background and displays brilliant flashes of color within the stone. Fire opal is often transparent, but has red, orange or brown overtones. Fire opal with a distinct red body color is called cherry opal. Jelly or water opal has no play of colors within and looks like a water droplet.

Opals should be handled with care. There are many misconceptions about how to treat them and we'd like to set the record straight for you. Stop in and see us or give us a call and we'd be pleased to share some opal tips with you.
