The Spell of Spinel

The Spell of Spinel

A gemstone which can be beautiful, spinel works its spell on those will- ing to be in the know. While some insist on degrading the gem because a synthetic spinel connotes high school class rings or little girls' birthstone rings, the truth spinel has even cast its spell on the royalty of England.

There are two gems among the Crown Jewels of England which prove how lovely spinel can be - they are called the Black Prince's Ruby and the Timur Ruby. Yes, they are called “ruby" in history, but in fact these lovely large red gemstones are beautiful red spinel.

Pink spinel is even rarer than pink topaz or pink sapphire. For those in the know, pink spinel is an excellent value because, while rarer than pink sapphire, it is more affordable.
Blue spinel also occurs in nature and yet this gem is also rare. Spinel occurs in a wide range of colors.

Like other colored gemstones, how the stone is valued depends in large part on the pleasing color of the stone. Spinel is subject to gray tones, which can dull color. Just as one bases the value of ruby or emerald on the beauty of color, so does one evaluate spinel.

Whatever your preferred color, you'll be interested in the colors in spinel.
