Australian Gems

Australia's appeal has continued to grow since the public became enamored of the charm of Crocodile Dundee. Two gemstones are especially prominent in Australia - opal and diamond.

Opal diamond mining is rigorous, some would say almost crazy. The miner must go into an excessively hot climate, survey the land without any well-known geological indicators of where opal might occur, dig a hole big enough to stand in to work during the blazing hot day, and dig a hole big enough to live in over time under the ground of the Australian desert for protection against the oppressive Australian desert sun.

The opal is worth the trouble. It is a multi-colored, pleasing gemstone, the variety and colorplay of which delights both wearer and viewer.

Another major gemstone mined in Australia is the diamond. Two kinds are mined at the Argyle mine, colorless and fancy colored diamonds. Recent attention has been focused, not on the exquisite pink diamonds produced at the Argyle, but on the rich deep warm brown diamonds. The rich browns are marketed under the names champagne and cognac, with various depths of shading ranging from light to dark. These gems are being marketed as champagne and cognac diamonds.

Australian opal and Australian fancy colored diamonds both make the world a warmer, more vibrant place. Bring a little of the Aussie to one you love, yourself included, Mate.
