Should We Pick Out an Engagement Ring Together?

One of the most common questions we hear is:

"Should we pick out the engagement ring together?"

The honest answer?

Well, there isn't one right answer, but there probably is a right answer for your relationship.

Some couples love shopping for the ring together. Others want every detail to be a surprise. Neither approach is more romantic than the other. The best choice is the one that feels most like you.

After helping couples choose engagement rings for more than 126 years, we've learned that beautiful proposals happen both ways.

Why You Should Pick Out the Ring Together

For many couples, choosing the ring together becomes part of the engagement story itself.

Some women know exactly what they want. They have Pinterest boards filled with inspiration, screenshots saved on their phone, and a very clear picture of their dream ring.

Shopping together gives her the opportunity to tell you exactly what she loves, while giving you the confidence that the ring she'll wear every day is one she'll truly adore.

Many couples are surprised to find that choosing the ring together doesn't take away from the proposal at all.

In fact, it often builds excitement.

She may know what the ring looks like, but she still has no idea when, where, or how you're going to ask one of the biggest questions of your life.

Seeing a ring in a jewelry store and seeing it in the hands of the person you love are two completely different moments.

Why You Might Want to Keep It a Surprise

For some people, the surprise is part of the magic.

There's something incredibly meaningful about taking the time to learn her style, choosing a ring yourself, and watching her see it for the very first time.

Many people enjoy knowing that every detail, from the proposal to the ring, was planned with their partner in mind.

If you know her style well, have talked about what she likes, or have a good idea of what she'd choose herself, picking the ring on your own can make for an unforgettable surprise.

The Best of Both Worlds

The good news is that shopping together and keeping it a surprise aren't your only options.

Many couples choose something in between.

You could:
  • Ask her to show you rings she likes online.
  • Look at Pinterest together.
  • Have her browse with her friends or family.
  • Stop into a jewelry store "just to look."
  • Narrow it down to a few favorites and make the final decision yourself.
This approach lets you understand her style while still keeping the proposal—and the final ring—a surprise.

For many couples, it's the perfect balance.

Which Option Is Right for You?

Choose to shop together if:
  • She has a very specific style in mind.
  • You'd rather know she'll absolutely love the ring.
  • You want the shopping experience to become part of your engagement story.
Choose a surprise if:
  • You know her style well.
  • She loves unexpected moments.
  • Picking the ring yourself feels meaningful to you.
Choose a combination of both if:
  • You want some guidance without giving everything away.
  • She enjoys sharing ideas but still loves surprises.
  • You'd like the confidence of knowing what she likes while making the final decision yourself.
Whether you choose the ring together or keep it completely secret, remember that there isn't a "correct" way to begin your engagement.

Some of our favorite stories begin with a nervous guy walking into the store by himself. Others begin with couples laughing together as they try on rings side by side.

The most meaningful engagement ring isn't the one that was bought the "right" way. It's the one that becomes part of your story.
